Abstract

ADPKD is a "Genetic disorder" caused by a mutation in genes. It is a painful disease that impacts the quality of life. It is a progressive disease and the symptoms worsen over time. There are so many genetic disorders like Huntington's disease, Sickle cell Anemia, Cystic Fibrosis, Hemophilia, etc. Now we are going to discuss in detail about ADPKD and its management in Ayurveda with herbal formulations.

What is ADPKD?

ADPKD is an "Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease" in which a tiny group of cysts develops predominantly within the kidneys causing them to enlarge and gradually start losing its function with time. The Kidneys get enlarged like a football as the average size of a typical kidney is a human fist.

The main cause of the ADPKD is "Genetic Mutation". The genes which are commonly affected are PKD1 and PKD2.

On the basis of genes affected, ADPKD is of two types:-

Both types have the same symptoms but it gets more severe in PKD1.

What is the Diagnosis of ADPKD?

  • Ultrasound is the most common and widely used method for ADPKD patients. The findings are enlarged echo texture of kidneys with multiple small cysts and Kidney stones etc.
  • Renal functions test (serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, etc.) should be done.

What is the General Treatment available for ADPKD?

  • In modern science, there is no cure for ADPKD but the disease is manageable With Symptomatic treatment. The symptoms like high BP, Pain, and UTI can be treated with Medications. If the Condition Worsens and Kidneys are unable to function properly then the Patient goes for Dialysis and Kidney Transplant.

1. Mutrakrichantak Churna

Dosage : 1 tsp twice daily with normal water and for best result Boil 1 Teaspoonful in 400ml water until it remains 50-60ml. Strain and drink it.

2. Nephralka Capsule

It contains the extract of Bhumi Amla (Phyllanthus Niruri), Kaalmegha ( Andrographis Paniculata), mooli satva ( Raphanus Raphanistrum), etc which is helpful in kidney infections and neutralizes all the ill effects of toxins in the kidney and control blood pressure.

Dosage : capsules, twice a day, with plain water, after meals.

3. Punarnava Mandoor

It mainly consists of Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Shunti ( Zingiber officinale), Pippali ( PiperLongum), Maricha ( Piper Nigrum), Amalaki ( Emblica Officinalis), Haritaki ( Terminalia chebula), Chavya (Piper Retrofractum), Haridra ( Curcuma longa), Vidanga ( Embelia Ribes), Chitrak Mool ( Plumbago zeylanica), Mandoor Bhasma ( Boerhavia diffusa) which helps to maintain water balance in the body and helpful in preventing the progression of renal failure.

4. Phyllanthus Niruri

5. Kanchnaar Guggul

6. Reno Plan Syrup

It consists of Bhumi Amla ( Phyllanthus niruri), Varun ( Crataeva Nurvala), Kaalmegh ( Andrographis paniculata), Gorukhmundi ( Sphaeranthus indicus), etc. which helps to clear kidney stones and maintains the water balance in the body.

Dosage : 1-2 tsp twice a day after meals with plain water

7. Loknath Ras

It consists of Shudh Parad, Shudh Gandhaka, Bhasma of various minerals like Abhraka, Loha, Tamra, etc. and Nagavalli Swarasa which helps in reducing the formation of cysts and having an anti-inflammatory property which helps in balancing Vata dosha.

Dosage : 1 tab twice daily after meals with plain water.
