Little Mr A loves to learn.  He enjoys school but also wants to carry on his learning at home.  I sometimes struggle to give him enough information and to know what to show him as things have changed a lot since I was at school!

We were recently sent a bundle of educational books from Letts Education and Collins.  I remember the Collins dictionaries from when I was at school, however, wasn’t aware of all of the different books they made to help your children learn at home.

The books we were sent included – four books from the fun Monster Skills Practice including handwriting, spelling and phonics, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division all for ages 5-6; the Letts Success Skills Practice Times Tables for ages 5-7; Collins My First Encyclopaedia and My First Book of Wonders of the World for ages 5-8.

These books are aimed at children aged 5-6 so reception and Year 1.  The books follow the national curriculum so you know whatever they are learning from the books is what they will be learning at school.

Little Mr A started on the handwriting book but did find that he had done a lot of this already at school (he is in Year 1) and so found the activities very easy.  I think this book would be perfect for reception aged children who have just started learning to write.

Next he moved onto the spelling and phonics which he is currently working his way through.  Although he has done some of these activities at school, he is enjoying working his way through and finding some of the activities quite challenging.  The book has introduced him to word searches and crosswords which he initially said he couldn’t do but, after sitting with him to show him, he now loves!

We are yet to move onto the maths books, however, having had a look through them, I think the activities look perfect for Little Mr A.  Although he is great at reading and writing his maths skills definitely need improving upon and these activities will help him no end.

The books are really well laid out and the activities easy to follow.  At the end of each double page you are told to color in one section of the picture at the back of the book.  The idea is that when you have finished all of the activities, you will have a nicely coloured picture.  It is a great incentive to keep going, as are the stickers that come with the book!

I think these Monster Skills books are perfect for helping your child learn at home during their first couple of years at school.

This times tables book is aimed at children aged 5-7.  As with the Monster Skills books, it is very well laid out and easy to read.  I know that Little Mr A will get a lot out of this book.  He has started touching on times tables at school but has not gone into great detail yet so I know this book will help him get a head start at home.

The Collins My First books are fantastic educational books that are very easy to read for young children as the facts are set out into nice little chunks so they are not having to read too much information at once.

The Encyclopaedia couldn’t have come at a better time for Little Mr A.  He is currently learning about planets and the solar system at school and that is the first topic in the book!

Little Mr A loves to read and loves learning about new things so these books are perfect for him to be able to sit down with and read little bits of at a time.  They are full of brightly coloured pictures too to hold his attention.
