If you had 24 hours in the Hamptons and Montauk, where would you eat?
That was the not-at-all-troubling question facing me and one of my best friends, Melissa, last week. Here are just a few of our dining-centered answers:
Lunch at Pierre's in Bridgehampton. Shady table outside - a bit of a tight squeeze - and fresh, thick, chilled gazpacho with a little crusty bread and olive oil. Simple, great for chatting (though with tables so close together on the sidewalk, don't bother to share anything private) and fun for people watching.
Wolffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack. It's like Napa in NY. Enjoy a flight, maybe a nosh (some raw almonds, a little dried fruit, sliced apple) while admiring a stunning view. Bottles of what you love most are available for purchase, along with other souvenirs.
Dave's Grill in Montauk. Better for seafood lovers than vegans, but the vegetable roll, zucchini "linguini" and chopped salad made for a great dinner. Hard to beat a sunset over the water, friendly faces (it was still packed when we were finally seated at 9:30pm!) and great company while waiting for your table on the patio outside on a warm summer night.
Babette's in East Hampton. I had the kale salad with smoked tempeh. My friends had the lentil and beet salad and the Asian tofu stir fry veggies. We each kicked off the meal with a flavorful (and not strong) Bloody Mary. Right in the heart of fabulous true-to-the-Hamptons shopping.
If you want to feel world's away but be just a couple of hours outside NYC (though traffic is what it is,) this should be on the list for next weekend - surely for next summer. Just be sure you make time for catching a fabulous sunset wherever you dine!
