I remember being about 14 when the movie Chicago was released. I also remember being in complete awe of the flawless choreography, Richard Gere and off-course the sassy Catherine Zeta Jones's character Velma Kelly.
Recently I got to see this marvel of a musical movie, and fell in love with it again, but this time, I was in awe of Rene Zellweger. It was amazing watching her character Roxie Hart transform from a damsel in distress to this "killer" queen of hearts.
So of course this look that I did is is basically a haphazardly created cocktail of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, the murderess flappers of the roaring twenties.
"Flappers were a "new breed" of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. Flappers had their origins in the liberal period of the Roaring Twenties, the social, political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I, as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe." - [excerpt taken from Wikipedia]
There are a few rules to get the flapper look :
- be as pale as possible
- apply a pretty good amount of blush on your cheeks for a pinched look
- draw your lips in the shape of a heart
- pucker up with deep red lips
- keep the face matte
- the flapper dress - basically a super sequinned black/gold/beige/pearl white dress with fringe or layers.
- tights+garter
- multiple pearl necklaces worn together
- fur (faux fur ;) )
- a pretty headband
What Do You Need For The Look?
This is a very very easy look to achieve. All you need is a dress that fits the bill and a few random pearl necklaces. Makeup is pretty simple..foundation+liner+mascara+red lips!Add lashes if you want that extra effect. Personally my husband hates when I put on fake lashes, as he think it becomes too made up. For my head piece I used my choker necklace... :)For hair - I curled them and then tied the ends with a band. Then I folded them in and secured them with a bobby pin from inside, creating a faux bob.I hope you liked the look, and I hope it met the standards of a proper OOTD/Halloween post :P
Love to all my readers!!
