Greyhound Café: Stylish Bangkok Restaurant with Affordable Fare

By Thelostboylloyd @lloydthelostboy

Greyhound Café, now with 10 branches scattered across Bangkok, started out as a food and beverage outlet to complement an eponymous fashion brand. As the first fashion café in Bangkok, if not the whole Thailand, its image is built around a design concept that is modern, stylish, and attractive to an urbanite clientele. I came for late lunch to try its best dishes. Read more…

The one I went to at Groove@CentralWorld is no exception to the brand’s vision. Adapting a theme reminiscent of an art gallery, the particular branch creates a chic atmosphere with its luxurious furnishings, décor, and surface materials. The counters are marble, tiles are made of glass, black and white photographs line the walls, and metallic blobs hover above the dining area.

As I sat, I was offered a drink from their healthy cocktails line. Because its ingredients sounded good to me much as its name, I went for the Innocent Voyage, a refreshing medley dominated by the tanginess of orange, grapefruit, and pineapple.

Exploring the menu, there’s much to want—after all, Greyhound Café’s selections are, as I was told, “basic with a twist.” I was thus presented with familiar Thai, Western, and fusion dishes that come with a flair that’s tasty, quirky, or both.

The starter was Salmon Sashimi in Spicy Hot Sauce. Fine, it wasn’t really sashimi, for it wasn’t prepared and cut the way the Japanese would. Rather, the dish was formed by taking thinly sliced smoked salmon then topping it with cloves of garlic and their spicy hot sauce. Despite the spicy and hot in its name, the dish was rather mild, but their entire signature dish worked!

The next course presented was rather confusing. It says on the menu—as supported by its ingredients—that it’s technically a sandwich, but it’s served in a bowl. Their Sandwich in a Bowl, I hence concluded, is a cross of both—sitting on a spread of lettuce were mushrooms and tuna smothered with Caesar dressing and topped with toasted bread slices in place of croutons. There wasn’t a need to comprehend the dish because, trust me, it was delicious and comforting.

For the pasta dish, I had their Spaghetti with Dried Salty Fish, which was stir-fried with basil leaves and chili. I slurped strands of the noodles and exclaimed, “Whoa!” It was a tad hot for my liking, but I was told that the heat can be lessened by request. The heat notwithstanding, I kept on eating it because it was really flavorful, nonetheless.

The killer came last—the Greyhound Famous Fried Chicken Wings. The wings are cut up, with the meaty part used, and they’re marinated in fish sauce then deep fried. Although the menu claims that prepping these tasty morsels is that straightforward, I did detect a hint of spice and probably lemongrass. But allow me to put everything simply: their wings are to die for.

While the parade of food filled my tank up, the menu by Sweethound, their sister dessert cafe, proved to be too tempting. Among a wide choice of sweet-tooth pleasers, I found myself gravitated towards their DIY Waffle. I picked chocolate and red velvet waffles, almonds, Nutella, and fresh strawberries accompanied by butter, whipped cream, and vanilla ice cream on the side.

With a range of sumptuous fare, Greyhound Café truly is one of Bangkok’s must-eat places. The best part is, everything in their menu doesn’t break the bank, so for visitors and locals alike, it’s an ideal, classy place to be in touch with Thai cuisine at a little more than the price of street food.
