Book review of Early Reader series – Shumba’s Big Adventure and Cudweed’s Time Machine
Little Mr A was recently sent two great books from the selection of early readers published by Orion.
The books we received are Shumba’s Big Adventure and Cudweed’s Time Machine.
About Shumba’s Big Adventure

Written by Lauren St John this is a story about a lion cub called Shumba who goes exploring one night finding himself on a boat to England with a whole variety of animals including gorillas, snakes and monkeys to name a few.
About Cudweed’s Time Machine
Written by Marcus Sedgewick this book sees Cudweed coming face to face with Roman soldiers, dinosaurs and Vikings on a great adventure and journey through time.
What we thought of the Early Reader books
The Early Reader books are perfect for the stage Little Mr A is at at the moment. He is really enjoying reading but finds the picture books he receives from school far too easy and not very engaging. These books combine many more words, however, still maintaining plenty of colourful pictures to keep younger children entertained and to break up the writing.
Because the chapters in the books are relatively short, Little Mr A has really enjoyed picking up the books, reading a couple of chapters then putting it down to read again later.
They are also great to sit down and read together and make perfect bedtime stories as you don’t have to read it all in one go.
I will certainly be keeping a look out for other titiles in the Early Reader range as I think they are a great next step for Little Mr A.
