Grammys Best and Worst Dressed

By Jenmcd @jen_mcdonnell

It was a big weekend for red carpets! I covered the BAFTAs in an earlier post, so let’s turn our focus to the Grammys, shall we? Traditionally, I don’t pay much attention to this one, since it’s usually just a parade of hoochie, sequined-encrusted mall dresses. But the Grammys’ new crackdown on, um, cracks made this an interesting one to watch. Not everyone followed the new rules, but it definitely was a more conservative show than years past. That doesn’t mean there weren’t a lot of fashion winners — and losers.

Best Dressed:

rihanna-grammys
This was the most un-Rihanna look I’ve ever seen Rihanna wear and, not uncoincidentally, one of my favourites. Though she probably should have flash-camera tested her red custom Azzedine Alaia gown (it was uncomfortably see-through in some shots), it was still stunning.

Kelly Rowland flaunted her curves (and the Grammy rules) in this teasingly cut Georges Chakra gown.

For once, Taylor Swift didn’t dress up like a sparkly princess. Instead, she opted for a mature J Mendel gown in white, which is perfectly on trend.

Kat Dennings
was a total charmbomb in her Grammy red carpet interview with Ryan Seacrest, giving shout-outs to strippers and Kobe Bryant. I was also charmed by her short, architectural Vivienne Westwood dress.  ——>

natasha-bedingfield-Grammys
Red is a tough color to pull off on the red carpet, but Natasha Bedingfield had no issues in this fiery Emerson number.

Honourable mentions go to Faith Hill in a lacy J Mendel and Florence Welsh, who left the curtains at home this time to wear a green custom Givenchy instead.

Worst Dressed:

carly-rae-jepsen-grammys
Ok, Carly Rae Jepsen. You’ve been famous long enough now to have landed a decent stylist. A Roberto Cavalli dress (which looks like it’s made from a garbage bag) and frumpy hair just isn’t going to cut it any more.

adele-grammys
I love and adore Adele and she looks great post-baby, but this dress isn’t doing her any favours. It’s just too busy.  ——>

jennifer-lopez-grammys
Jennifer Lopez‘s Anthony Zacarello gown might have come across as daring — if Angelina Jolie hadn’t owned the leg thing at last year’s Oscars. Now JLo just comes across as looking desperate (though not as desperate as ET Canada, who actually interviewed Casper Smart. On camera!).

nicole-kidman-grammys
I don’t necessarily hate Nicole Kidman‘s Vera Wang gown, but I feel like she needs to step away from the lace-dress-with-visible-granny-panties trend. It’s been twice in row now!   ——>

katy-perry-grammys
Here’s Katy Perry in Gucci. Or should I say Katy Perry’s boobs in Gucci, since that was all anyone could focus on. Just ask Ellen.

Dishonourable mentions go to Carrie Underwood (who’s Roberto Cavalli oddly made her look thicker than she is) and Beyonce (who managed to do something I didn’t think was possible — bore us).
