GONE, PART TWO
The Security Guards looked at me as if I was crazy. I know what I did this morning! I know I dropped Dean off to that nurse with a wheelchair! Why don’t they just tell me where my husband is?
I put my face into my hands and began to cry. I didn’t know what else to do! No one was helping me. They were all trying to cover up what they did to my beloved Dean! Why though? Why Dean?
As I sat there crying into my hands, I hear a man’s voice.
“Ma’am, this is Dr. Cranston. He is one of the Orthopedic Surgeons here at the hospital.”
I looked up and saw this older man with a doctor’s coat on.
“Mrs. Winters, I checked the schedule for surgeries today and we didn’t have your husband on our list. What I’d like to do is for you to come with me and speak with Dr. Adler. She may be able to shed a bit more insight into this situation.”
“Dr. Adler? Why does that name sound familiar? Did she consult with Dean?”
“Please come this way Ms. Winters and we’ll get all this straightened out.”
I rose from my chair and followed haphazardly down the hall with Dr. Cranston.
“I just don’t understand what is going on Dr. Cranston. How is it even possible that no one has seen my husband? Why are they trying to hide him from me?”
“Mrs. Winters, I’m sure Dr. Adler will be able to help us. It’s right this way.”
We walked for what seemed forever down white halls with doors on each side. It was rather loud with people talking and a few hollering. I’ve never been down this end of the hospital so I had no idea what to expect.
We approached an office door that read Dr. Judith Adler, Psychologist, on the door.
“Psychologist?”
We were greeted by an attractive young woman. “Come right in Mrs. Winters. I’ve been expecting you.”
“You have? Can you tell me where my husband is? No one seems to believe me or know where he is? Please tell me you know something!”
“Please have a seat Mrs. Winters, or may I call you Cara?”
“Cara is fine.” I saw two more men walk in behind me and close the door. The looked like nurses all dressed in white. “What is going on?” I turned to the men and asked “Do you know where Dean Winters is?”
“Mrs. Winters, Cara, we’d like to help you out but first I need you to relax. Can you do that for us?”
“How can I relax when no one will help me?” I went to stand up from my chair and one of the men in white put his hand on my shoulder and pushed me back down. “What the…..”
He inserted a needle into my neck! What the hell! The other man came to my left side and began strapping my wrist around the arm of the chair.
“What the hell is going on? I demand answers!”
“Cara, I know you are very confused right now. The needle was filled with a relaxant which will help you calm down so we can discuss the situation.”
Feel a bit tired and woozy, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was dreaming or not!
“Alright, let’s get started” Dr. Adler said “Do you remember me Cara? Do you remember being in this room?”
“No! What are you talking about? You look familiar but I assumed you were Dean’s doctor!”
“Cara, I’m not Dean’s doctor. I am your Psychologist and you’ve been consulting me for over a year now.”
“No! This can’t be possible! What are you telling me? I’m crazy?” I tried to stand up but surely had no strength to do so.
“Please relax Cara. Let’s go back to the events that started this” she said flipping open a file that had my name on it.
“I don’t understand what is going on! Please tell me what is happening!”
“Cara, your husband Dean, passed away a year ago. Do you remember the incident?”
“Passed away? He died? That’s not possible! I dropped him off here this morning!”
“Dean came in for surgery on his knee and there were complications. The anesthesia was too much for him and he had a heart attack. We were unable to save him.”
“Oh my God! Please tell me this is a trick! Dean is not dead! I dropped him off this morning to the nurse and she wheeled him away in the wheelchair!”
“Cara, you were coming here this morning for your weekly session. I thought you were making progress but I believe I was mistaken. Something must have triggered your memory. Have you been upset over something lately?”
“Dr. Adler clearly you have me confused with someone else! Dean is not dead!”
“Cara, please listen to me when I say, Dean is gone. You said goodbye to him and buried him over a year ago. Why don’t you get a bit of rest and we can resume our discussion later.”
“I don’t……”
Just then I felt another pinch, like a needle. The man in white on my left had stuck me again with a needle. I instantly felt my head drop and unable to lift it.
“Josh and Bob, if you don’t mind taking Mrs. Winters to Room 423 and getting her settled into her bed, I’d really appreciate it. You might want to restrain her arms and legs in the event she awakes and doesn’t remember where she is.”
“We’ll take care of her Dr. Adler. You have to remember, we’ve been down this road before with Mrs. Winters.”
“Very true Josh. Thank you for all your help.”
Josh and Bob lifted Cara out of her seat and into a wheelchair for easy transport.
Dr. Adler opened Cara’s file and began writing:
Patient is exhibiting delusional thoughts about her late
husband, Dean Winters. Have sedated here and taken to
a holding room for further examination.
Recommended – In-Patient Stay upon evaluation.
