Gone

By Bren @Virtual_Bren

PART ONE

I remember taking Dean to the hospital for surgery on his knee. I helped him inside the door of the hospital to meet the nurse with the wheelchair.

“I’m going to go park the car and I’ll be right back.” I leaned in to kiss him on the forehead and grabbed my hand.

“I’ll be fine. See you in a few minutes.”

I got back to the car and headed for the parking garage. I wasn’t gone but 5 minutes at the most.

When I arrived in the hospital lobby to ask what room Dean was in, the nurse said “We don’t have anyone here by that name.”

“What do you mean there isn’t a Dean Winters here. I just dropped him off and the nurse took him in a wheelchair!”

“I’m sorry ma’am but we don’t have a patient here by that name. Did you get the name of the nurse? Maybe she’s hasn’t logged him in yet.”

“I didn’t get her name, but she had dark hair in a bun with bright red lipstick on. I told Dean and her I was going to park the car and I’d be right back!”

“I’m sorry miss but we do not have a Dean Winters here.”

“Wait! Hey! You!” I yelled pointing at the nurse who just came down the hall. “Where did you take Dean?”

I ran over to the woman who looked at me as though she had never seen me before.

“Where did you take Dean?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Miss. Dean who?”

“You just met my husband and I at the hospital lobby and you took Dean in a wheelchair! I kissed him on the forehead and told both of you I was going to park the car! Where did you take him?”

“Ma’am I’m sorry but I don’t know what you’re talking about. This is the first time I’ve seen you and I just came on my shift.”

“I need to talk to your superior! I want to know where the hell my husband is! Why won’t you tell me where he is?”

With all the hollering I was doing, it must have stirred a ruckus. A few of the hospital Security Guards were headed my way.

“Excuse me! Can you help me?” I said to the guards “I just dropped my husband off in the front lobby for a follow-up on his leg. THAT nurse right there met us with a wheelchair and took him down the hall! Now she says she didn’t and I want to know what the hell is going on!”

“Ok ma’am, please come with us and we’ll get this straightened out.”

Turning around and looking at the nurse, I hollered “I’m going to get to the bottom of this and I’m going to have your license!”

“Come with us please.”

The entire walk down the hall to the Security office seemed like an eternity. I looked into every open door down the hallway hoping to see Dean or the wheelchair. But I saw nothing. The Security Guards escorted me into a room that had several monitors.

“Ma’am, do you know what time it was you dropped your husband off? I can check the video and hopefully find out what’s going on.”

“Yes, it was 10:15 am because our appointment was at 10:30 am.”

“Ok, let’s go back in history on the video and see what we come up with.”

“There! That’s my car!”

He stopped the video and played at normal speed.

“Ma’am, I don’t see anyone getting out of the car other than you.”

“That’s not possible! I brought Dean here and even helped him out of the car with his crutches! What the hell is going on?”
