Don’t you just love a day off? Nothing to worry about. No alarm clock and no deadlines. Just a long day of relaxation and having fun. And when you get to spend some time with your best friend, that’s even better.

While I’m a big believer in the long lie-in, sometimes it’s good to get out early and make the most of the day.

Be Spontaneous

Don’t plan. Be spontaneous and do something completely different. When you wake up decide where you want to go and just do it. Jump on a train and see where it takes you. Go to the beach or a Fun Park. Spend the day in the countryside or visiting a new town. This is a great way to try new things and meet new people. Who knows where the day will take you?

Shopping

Shopping is always fun. Well, usually. I’m not a big fan of food shopping or buying last-minute Christmas gifts. But on the whole, it’s fun. Rather than heading to your local town, try somewhere new. Jump on the train and visit a completely different area. Enjoy browsing through the local shops and taking in the different scenery.

Afternoon tea feels like a luxury. When your everyday life is busy and hectic, sitting in a tea shop is divine. I love those sampler menus where you get a tall cake stand full of tiny delights. And it’s great to try specialty teas and different flavors and infusions. As an aside, if your life is particularly hectic try these time-saving apps.

See a Movie

Go to the cinema and watch a movie. Avoid the evening crowds and relish the quiet of an empty auditorium. Try independent cinemas that are a little farther afield and offer a variety of films. Many cinemas offer old movies and themed days which can be fun. Treat yourself to popcorn and ice-cream.

Boozy Lunch

Relish the fact that you don’t have to be back by 2:00 pm and enjoy a long boozy lunch. Instead of going to your regular haunts, try something completely different. And don’t order your usual food. Try new flavors and combinations.

If you’re both in need of a little relaxation, then opt for a pamper day. Look out for online discounts and vouchers in your local newspaper. Spend the day unwinding at your local spa. Book your treatments in advance and let someone else take away the stresses and strains. If you can combine this with a dip in the pool, then even better. Take some magazines and enjoy the quiet, serene atmosphere.

Go for a Walk

If you’re a country mouse and long for green fields and rolling hills, spend the day in the countryside. Plan a long walk and check your route in advance. Check the weather too or take waterproofs. Split the day up with a leisurely lunch in a country pub before jumping on the train and coming home.

Days off are few and far between and spending time with your friends is even scarcer. Make the most of the time you have together. Have fun and make memories. And don’t leave it so long next time. Book your days off in advance to give you something to look forward to.
