I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the 2016 BookSparks Fall Reading Challenge (#FRC2016). I love being a part of these challenges because books are often brought to my attention that I may have never heard and may have missed out on the reading pleasure too. Today’s book, London Belongs to Me by Jacquelyn Middleton falls under the
London Belongs to Me is the story is about Alex Sinclair, who is a 21 year old woman who can’t wait to get out of town and jump on a plane to London. She wants to fulfill her dreams of writing for the theatre and her hometown in Florida isn’t the place for that. The fact that Alex has a bitter mother and a cheating ex-boyfriend really has her moving forward with her dreams. She’s planning to stay with her college friend, Harry, who lives in an apartment with Olivia, his girlfriend.
Alex soon realizes that her big move isn’t going to be easy – her luggage is lost upon arrival, Harry can’t meet her, and there’s a horrible thunderstorm, leaving Alex soaking wet by the time she arrives at the apartment. When she sees what is to be her “room”, she soon realizes what she’s really dealing with – a tiny little room, maybe even a closet without windows, which is to be her bedroom. Olivia has already given the room meant for Alex to her brother, Tom, and Olivia has already made it clear that she will do whatever is necessary to make Alex’s life miserable.
Olivia then steals from Alex and gets her to move out under false pretenses. Fortunately for Alex, her new London friends, Lucy and Freddie, truly care about her, stand by her and want to help her out. Everything leads to a heated confrontation when Alex finds her own voice and deals with Olivia. Alex discovers what it truly means to have great friends in a town that she already loves so much.
This story really shows how someone can follow your dreams trying to achieve what you desire the most. This story also shows readers that no matter what is happening in your life, you don’t have to change the nice person that you are.
The author really makes this story come to life with her strong, vivid descriptions of London and the story is great thanks to her well developed characters. I can’t believe this is a debut book! We will be seeing more of Jacquelyn Middleton, I’m sure.
