Here you go, Amani [Toomer], I brought you a shovel. You know, so you can use it to continue digging your own grave.
Former New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer believes Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is better than Giants quarterback Eli Manning.
Oddly enough, Toomer's lack of loyalty comes as a bit of a surprise, considering he spent five seasons in New York catching passes from the younger Manning brother.
You know what? Screw it. I'm not sugar-coating it. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not only does Toomer's come with a strong scent of betrayal towards his former team and teammate; it also has a hint of downright idiocy.
I mean, seriously, dude!?
Let's take a look at the comments the ex-Giants receiver used as his unsuccessful attempt to sway any of us.
"Tony Romo is probably, if you look at it, statistically, the best quarterback in the NFC East," Toomer said on the "Movin' the Chains" show on Sirius XM NFL Radio. "You look at Eli Manning and what he does in the fourth quarter, but you talk about consistency, talking about 31 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions, that guy (Romo) can play."
Okay, let me stop it there.
Tony freaking Romo over Eli Manning!? Maybe on the golf course, but certainly not on the gridiron.
For my money, Romo doesn't even belong in this conversation and I think most NFL fans outside of Dallas would tend to agree with me. Hell, with the Cowboys' lack of playoff success under Romo's tenure, it wouldn't surprise me if even a few Dallas fans agreed with me on this. Eli is a far superior quarterback -- end of story.
Romo is 18-19 in his career against the NFC East and 5-7 against the Giants, including three losses to Eli and co. at Cowboys Stadium.
Meanwhile Manning, fresh off his second Super Bowl title, is 26-20 versus the NFC East and 9-6 against the Cowboys, including no losses at Cowboys Stadium.
Toomer didn't care. He still likes Romo.
"I'm talking about for me, if I wanted a guy that is going to through less interceptions and be more productive, higher completion percentage, I'm going to go with Tony Romo," Toomer said.
Something tells me this was just some misguided ploy by Toomer's camp to try and get him back in the news. Well, congratulations, Amani, mission accomplished. You're back in the news, but only due in part that the majority of the news in the NFL world right now is either completely irrelevant, extremely dry, or just completely nonexistent while we wait for the start of training camp.
Thank goodness the news world can count on knucklehead former Giants players who, for a reason unbeknownst to us, have an ax to grind with Eli Manning. You should give your publicists a raise, honestly.
After all, bad publicity is better than none, right?
As an aspiring journalist, I thank you for making my job so easy. As a football fan, I'm abhorred and disgusted. Luckily for you, we no longer live in the Middle Ages or you would be burned at the stake as a heretic at the 50-yard line in the Meadowlands. But don't worry, all the Giants faithful everywhere will undoubtedly let you hear about it with their "boos" nonetheless.
However, there was some comedic relief in this train wreck when Toomer quickly lost ground in his argument when told of Romo's late-game struggles.
Manning has 21 fourth-quarter comebacks and 25 game-winning drives, four of those victories coming against the Cowboys, including one this past season. Meanwhile, of Romo's 13 fourth-quarter comebacks, only one has come at the expense of the G-Men.
"At crunch time, he's not as good as Eli," Toomer said. "But every other time, he's pretty darn good."
So, Romo is 'pretty darn good' is he, Amani?
Answer me this, how has being 'pretty darn good' held up come playoff time? How many Super Bowls has Romo won? Oh that's right, he hasn't.
If you're ever in a debate about quarterbacks, it's worth noting that individual statistics always take a back seat when compared to overall team success.
Two Super Bowls for Eli to none for Romo.
Seems like an obvious choice to me.
