Ethiopia in Brussels – Azeb Café

By Ingridd @cosytraveler

You either hate it or love it: Brussels is a multicultural city. Part of the European Parliament is located here, but lots of other nationalities call the Belgian capital their home as well.

We live in an area where there are lots of restaurants and pubs. Just around the corner is a sushi bar and an Ethiopian restaurant, Azeb Café. Since Ingrid and I are acquainted with the Japanese cuisine, we decided to give the Ethiopians a go.

There is a warm and cozy atmosphere. Whether you come here for a drink or a meal, you are welcome. The owners speak French and English, which makes conversation easy.

In Azeb Café, you eat like a real Ethiopian. This means no knives nor forks; you pick up your food with a hearty pancake. Eating is also regarded as a social event; everybody eats from the same dish. And you can wash it all down with an Ethiopian or Belgian beer.

I went for beef with turmeric, whereas Ingrid chose chicken and egg, prepared with lots of spices. Salad, tomatoes and cheese are the usual side dishes. The food can be very spicy, but not hot. I also had a mango cocktail as desert and after we had paid, we both got some honey wine as well. In short, the food and drinks were excellent!
