Animals can be either very shy, very aggressive  or very curious. And in Antarctica you don’t know what’s going to happen, or if any of those things are going to happen at all. Anyway, on one of our last expeditions, this time in Wilhelmina Bay, we were crossing our fingers to see some big-mammal-action. However, we never thought to experience such interaction so close. The Humpback Whale from the image was the most curious animal I’ve ever encountered. It wasn’t scared or angry, but wondering what we were and what were we doing there. That’s my theory, at least. But those minutes we spent admiring each other was as ephemeral as the beauty of seeing these animals in their natural environment.
