Dreamworks Animation signs 5-Year Distribution Deal with 20th Century Fox

Dreamworks has a new partner to distribute their films. One I wouldn’t of expected.

Briefly: [Collider (Per Deadline)], Jeffrey Katzenberg’s DreamWorks Animation was apparently looking at Sony Pictures as a possible distribution partner in the last few weeks, but a deal never materialized and DWA then turned to Fox.  This new deal will begin in 2013 and lasts for five years, through 2017.

This interested me for a number of reasons.

  1. How will feature Animations from Fox and DreamWorks be placed in the market? Obviously they’ll have to stagger them in order to not cannibalize their profits, but it should be interesting.
  2. Could there be any crossovers between the franchises or is this purely a distribution deal? Could you imagine a Dragons/Ice Age mashup?
  3. Maybe Dreamworks isn’t the power it once was? Without Shrek, their biggest successes lie in Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.

What if these seanarios were possible? Does it interest you?
