Dreaming of Summer

A Taste of Summer

Today the temperature is 25 degrees Fahrenheit in the early afternoon. Too cold for Oklahoma! It has been cold all weekend. I have completed many baking projects while inside. I made candy for my mother’s Valentine Day party at her senior apartment complex. I also dehydrated jerky for my husband who thinks mine is better than any store bought and not just because it is cheaper! I’m going to make some more next weekend so I will take pictures and write in recipes for those who are interested. But, today I’m dreaming of summer. You know, those long hot days when your mom let you go outside right after breakfast and you stayed out there all day playing, running and jumping with all your friends. Somewhere between lunch and dinner, the faint tune of the ice cream man would signal a cold afternoon treat. Everyone ran home quickly to get a dime (yes, they cost a dime back then) and each of us met at the corner for when the truck turned into our neighborhood.
We each had our favorite and mine was called a dreamsicle: a cross between orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream. I have been thinking about dreamsicles a lot lately so I thought I would try to duplicate that taste with the abundance of oranges that are in season right now. The result is what I call Dreamsicle Jam. It tastes divine! Doesn’t the picture make your mouth water? What flavors make you think of summer?

Tell me what you think!
