We recently were made aware of a new charitable Surgeons Give Support program created by Breast Oasis and AboutPlasticSurgery.com. The program is committed to recycling gently used bras. The bras are donated by plastic surgeons, patients and their communities, to women in need nationwide.
Breast Oasis Story
Throughout our communities, there are women who are in need of the basic essentials. Three years ago, Dr. John Pedersen, a plastic surgeon based in Akron, Ohio, questioned one of his female patients undergoing breast augmentation what she planned on doing with her existing bras. Her answer was quick and obvious, “I guess I’ll just throw them away.”
Dr. Pedersen decided there had to be a better answer and sought out ways to make use of these perfectly good and often expensive bras.
He went straight to his wife Sejal, whose first thought was to contact the local battered women’s shelter since many women staying at shelters have fled dangerous situations with nothing more than the clothes on their back. He did just that!
After thousands of donations of clothing, it was the first time the shelter had ever received a bra and was thrilled to continue collecting bras from then on.
Breast Oasis has grown considerably since then and collected over 100,000 bras. And the new partnership is spreading the great cause to more women across the country, from coast to coast.
Surgeons Give Support leads into October Breast Awareness Month, starting Monday, September 24th and ending Friday, November 2nd.
