According to a recent article in Forbes, environmental saboteurs in the U.S. receive broad popular support as well as financial resources from the organic foods industry.

The article’s authors Jay Byme, a corporate public relations expert and former U.S. AID senior official, and Henry I. Miller, founding director of the FDA’s Office of Biotechnology, claim that groups like Moms against Monsanto, Earth First!, GreenPeace, Stonyfield Organic and New York Time’s food writer Mark Bittman form a synergistic and terroristic anti-GMO food movement with the ultimate goal being “to sell more overpriced, overrated organic food.”

”Within hours of the FBI news release about the recent Oregon sugar beet vandalism, for example, activists and promoters of “natural” products and organic agriculture were posting images touting the terrorists’ eco-sabotage.  Many followers of these fear-mongering campaigns – including people who profess to be mainstream, reasonable supporters of a “right to know” which foods are genetically engineered (via mandatory labeling) — piled thousands of “likes” and supportive comments about the news that genetic engineering research had been destroyed.  One of the so-called “Moms against Monsanto” posted, “Great job.  I hope this turns into a trend.”

The authors go on to recount a list of eco-sabatoge attacks carried out by the Earth Liberation Front and point out further examples of mainstream support for the recent  action in Oregon where field trials of GE sugar beets were burned and destroyed by activists.

“Sometimes, that encouragement is blatant: After the sugar beet vandalism in Oregon, NaturalNews.com trumpeted that “We The People have had enough of being forcibly poisoned by these genetic abominations” and lamented that “freedom fighters who intervene on behalf of humanity [have been] relegated to the ranks of terrorists.”

According to the authors, the desire to sell organic produce has driven organic marketers to spuriously label GMO foods as dangerous, which then insights extremists to burn the genetically engineered crops.

“These specious charges are refuted by decades of peer-reviewed research and real-world experience that demonstrate that these foods are as safe, and in fact, often safer than their “conventional,” and especially, their organic counterparts.”

The Earth First! Journal has never advertised for organic food and especially not because we thought we would get a percentage, say 1 percent of all proceeds will go to acts of domestic economic sabotage of Monsanto crops. However, if you donate today, we might be able to find a way to make good use of your direct contribution.
