It seems like everyone these days has been divorced, is in the process of getting a divorce, is contemplating divorce or is a child of divorced parents. But is that really true?
Obie, the Wonderdog
In a recent blog post I mention my new-found love of podcasts ~ many are short enough to listen to while walking my dog which takes my mind off of how picky Obie can be in finding a tree or a bush! Ack! I’m digressing. . .
So, a podcast I listened to recently had me googling numbers and questioning the line we are sold about divorce being on the rise. But first, I must admit, Economics is NOT a favorite {or even likable} subject of mine. I transferred out of that class in college; however, I am beginning to recognize the benefits of said subject with my latest podcast discovery of Freakonomics! And what do the experts there have to say about divorce? That the divorce rate has continued to decline since its’ peak in 1979!
According to Marginal Revolution and an op-ed in the New York Times, the divorce myth is rising. . .the divorce rate; however, is not. To better clarify and see the lines dropping ~ a few charts at Divorce and the Business Cycle for your entertaining perusal.
These economics are encouraging to me. My faith in marriage has been greatly improved along with my understanding and belief in the actual subject of economics along with its purpose and value
So I’m taking my own unofficial poll ~ do you know anyone who has not been divorced?
are you perhaps {hopefully} in a marriage that is lasting?
This post was inspired by the novel The Divorce Papers. Young criminal case lawyer, Sophie, unwillingly takes her first divorce case with an entertaining and volatile client in this novel told mostly through letters and legal missives. Join From Left to Write on March 18th as we discuss The Divorce Papers. As a member, I received a copy of this novel for review purposes. The opinions expressed here are my own.
