I was wonderful to see an article about Demiurge New York in the Wall Street Journal design section. Atelier Demiurge was started by Rachel Shorr the niece of the late Amy Perlin. Amy Perlin was a very charismatic and talented antique dealer with impeccable taste. The design world suffered quite a loss at her untimely death in 2010. Shorr opened Demiurge in her aunt’s old space on Manhattan’s East 61stStreet. Here she is carrying on the legacy of furniture on quite an impressive scale with hints of patina that work well in any interior. The line consists of reclaimed-wood tables that are sure to be tomorrows sought after antiques. There are 22 models in the collection, including end tables up to dining tables. Shorr has combined contemporary and traditional, all orders being bespoke. The top of an Atelier Demiurge table is constructed of antique wood, usually walnut, chestnut or oak hand picked from Europe. The matching and assembly of boards are done in a local workshop. Most of the tables have solid wood surfaces, but larger pieces may be antique veneered. Supports are newly constructed with wood for legs or trestles. All new supports blend with the vintage materials seamlessly as to take nothing away from the designs. A great piece is only as great as it's finish, and Shorr has revealed that her finisher is –“a great artist”-from Belgium who travels here monthly to supervise the completion of each table.Demiurge New York also carries antiques, and fine art.
