It's been a while since we've heard anything from Lana Del Rey ... other than the Disney Snipper for Angelina Jolie's new flick, but that wasn't what we were after. Anyhow, she has now released her first new piece of material, and whilst it is nice to hear her whimsical vocal once again, we're not sure that this new sound will be to everyone's taste.
Meet Me In The Pale Moonlight is a track that'll instantly hit you. Like she has taken more from her role in The Great Gatsby soundtrack it has a strong sense of nostalgia attached to it ... but also that Pharrell may well have had his greedy little mitts involved. The guitars attached are evidently blended with the particularly trendy funk, but the rest has a strings effort attached that is very charming.
Anyway, on to the lady herself, Lana. When she starts, you might immediately be in a small sense of awe ... but don't take it for granted.
Lana has very much put herself into a pigeon-hole with gher debut album. She is the queen of gloom-pop, and this might be just a tad too light and cheerful for her. Now, to most, that might seem a little ridiculous and that we should allow her to have her happiness ... but then, our counter-argument would be that the subject matter of this song is very similar to that of her previous work, but without the twang that tracks like Off To The Races, or Dark Paradise had.
It's a shame really, because as a song it is rather good, but there's something about it that doesn't quite resemble the Lana we know and love, and for that reason, we can't quite get on board. Shame.
Paul.
