What Did I Miss?

Well, I haven’t written much of anything in a while.
Which is not to say there hasn’t been anything worth writing about. On the contrary, September has probably been the most interesting month for music in 2012 so far. Anticipation and popularity are the themes for new releases this month, from the biggest names in pop (P!nk, Carly Rae Jepsen) to the biggest names in anti-pop (The Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons) to the biggest names of the ’90s (Green Day, Dave Matthews Band) to one of the biggest names ever (Dylan).
So, suffice to say, September has been big. Here’s a quick recap of a few of my favorites from the month.
One of the most underrated classic rock bands of all time is still making badass music. I’ll admit, I was surprised how hard La Futura rocks, but there’s no denying the gutsy, growly, skanky masterpiece of Tex-Mex blues rock that La Futura proves to be. It’s a seamless addition to the ZZ Top catalog and with the possible exception of Dr. John’s Revolution, my favorite throwback release of 2012. Check out “I Gotsta Get Paid,” “Flyin’ High,” and “I Don’t Wanna Lose, Lose, You”; break out the boots, sunglasses, and shaky-knees dance moves; and prepare to get blown away.
Awesome indeed. Spelled “∆” and pronounced “Alt-J,” the Leeds-based band pioneers an aggressively chill sound on its debut album, An Awesome Wave. Electro-tribal rhythms and unconventional vocal stylings create a breezy aesthetic that I can only imagine is the British equivalent of frat boy anthems, but only because I know nothing about British college kids. Think Ed Sheeran but less mix-station and more Givers. Check out “Breezeblocks,” the Radical Face-like “Something Good,” and “Dissolve Me” for maximum effect.
I’m not gonna pretend I don’t love it.
