Dancers + Asthma

Posted on the 10 November 2010 by Ballerinablogger
As we all know, dancing is not easy. It takes a TON of effort and is utterly exhausting. I come out of most classes/rehearsals panting like a dog with sweat stains all over me. (Beautiful mental image, I know) Sometimes there are medical issues prohibiting us from giving 100%. I, like many other dancers, have Asthma.
Asthma is a condition that affects the air passages of the lungs. The air passages are inflamed meaning the airways are red and swollen. Different things can "trigger" asthma. For example, when I run (especially in cold weather) I can feel my Asthma start to kick in. We would call that exercises induced Asthma.
Asthma is definitely something that you should talk to your doctor about. You can get an inhaler to temporarily ease your symptoms. (To get one first talk to your doctor)

If you feel you have trouble breathing while you dancer or perform any kind of physical activity please speak to your doctor. Keep in mind that many people have asthma and still find ways to do the activities that they love.
