The Sound of Music revolves around Maria Rainer, a would-be nun who was given by Mother Abbess a rather daunting assignment—to be governess of the widowed Austrian Navy Captain Georg von Trapp’s brood of seven children. She sets music upon the von Trapp household and its surprisingly talented children. Music changes Captain von Trapp’s stern attitude towards his children and towards Maria whom he eventually and unexpectedly falls in love with. World War II and the Nazi Regime threatens Austria, yet the von Trapp family finds their way through wartime with the powerful accompaniment of music.
Leading the powerful cast are theater veterans Joanna Ampil and Cris Villonco alternating as Maria; Audie Gemora and Ed Feist alternating as Captain Georg von Trapp; Pinky Marquez and Sheila Francisco alternating as Mother Abbess; Miguel Faustman and Robbie Guevara alternating as Max Detweiler; and Pinky Amador and Lynn Sherman alternating as Baroness Elsa Schraeder.
I am no theater devotee, but I must say that I was thoroughly charmed by The Sound of Music as it reminded me of childhood. Songs like Do-Re-Mi, The Sound of Music, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, My Favorite Things, and Sixteen Going on Seventeen found me singing along in my seat. It did also help that I had an interest in World War II history, so I got to appreciate the milieu and the premise of the musical. It is a must watch, definitely.
