When I saw the description of this book, it really seemed different and interesting to me, so I was looking forward to reading it. I’m sure glad I had the opportunity to read Child of the State by Catherine Lea. I won’t lie though, I was a bit worried since it was the second book in a series and I hadn’t read the first book. As it turns out, I worried for nothing. This book was definitely a “stand alone” book that you can read without reading the first.
The main character, Stacy May Charms was only 15 when she gave birth to Tyler in the backseat of her boyfriend’s car. Then, at 17, Stacy was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting a social service worker taking her son, Tyler away from her. After only two years of incarceration, a state program piloted by socialite Elizabeth McClaine has given Stacy a second chance and she is released early. While in prison, Stacy sees a threatening message that gives her reason to believe that her life and her son’s life are in jeopardy. As soon as she is released from prison, Stacy flees which causes the police and the “bad guys” to go after Stacy. Meanwhile, socialite Elizabeth McClaine tries to figure out why Stacy fled and whether or not she needs help.
Elizabeth McClaine is the constant in Books 1 and 2 of this series by Catherine Lea, and if the character was anything like she was in this book, I’m sure Ms. Lea’s first book is great too! I love this character in the book! While I don’t usually go with this type of genre, I really felt that the details in this book truly capture the ever increasing danger, and provides readers with a thrilling and compelling story. Child of the State is fast paced with non-stop action and keeps readers glued to the pages (which in my case, ultimately made this book a very quick read since I couldn’t stop reading).
Catherine divides her time among numerous fictional worlds behind her keyboard. In past lives, she has sold international satellite capacity, worked in IT recruitment, and run her own communications store.
When Catherine isn’t writing, she’s dog-wrangling, wrestling with technology, or going crazy trying to maintain control of the yard. She also writes dark, gritty thrillers under the pen name C. J. Lea.
