Abstract

Cheyletiellosis is also known as "walking dandruff". It is a skin disorder which is caused by Cheyletiella spp. Mites. Dogs, cats and rabbits are mainly affected by this disease. These mites mainly live in the superficial layer of the skin. Humans are also affected by this disease from their pets. In humans it causes a mild pruritic dermatitis on the chest, legs and buttocks. It was first discovered in the 1800s. It is an uncommon disease of skin. It is mainly caused by cheyletiella spp parasite. It is also called "walking dandruff" because large whitish mites appear on the skin that they crawl. Due to use of more flea treatment this disease has become less frequent. It spreads easily by direct contact.The species which are more prone to this disease are rabbits, cats, dogs, and hares. Dandruff, itching and hair loss are the main symptoms shown by cheyletiellosis.

      • Cheyletiella parasitovorax is found in rabbits.

      Physical examination

      In cheyletiellosis mites can be visible easily on the skin, veterinarians can easily capture these mites with the help of a comb.

      Skin biopsy

      In this procedure sample of affected skin taken and examined under the microscope. With the help of this procedure we can easily diagnose how much infection spreads in the body.

      Treatment

      Medicated Baths - you should give a medicated bath to your pet once a week to remove scales and mites.

      Organophosphates can be used in adult dogs. You can also use spray and powders in the management of itching and redness.
