There is probably no better rig that catches more fish during the winter than the float n' fly. It is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. A small quill or slip float with a small hair jig suspended 10-12 feet below it. you will have better results with a clip on style float and a long 7 foot plus rod. If your a bank fisherman your better off going with the slip float. Simply cast it out and let it sit. Keep an eye out for any movement of the float if nothing happens give the line a few twitches to make the jig dance a bit. Be ready to set the hook. Most fish will not hit the bait hard so by the time you notice it they may be about to spit it out. This rig will catch about anything that swims. bass, bluegill, crappie, walleye, sauger, catfish and carp have all been caught using this method. Next time you go out give it a try.
