Budapest - New York Cafe and the Thermal Baths

By Yummei @yummmei
The best part of going away on city breaks is the exploring.
Finding that hidden cafe that only you seem to know about, and wandering around winding pathways until you get hungry.
I've never been that person that plans where I go, life is more fun when you just go with the flow.
One of my favorite places that I ambled across in Budapest was The New York Cafe.
I heard whispers of it's magnificence, but never thought that I would actually stumble across is.
It was as if I was drawn like a moth to a flame.

If you squint hard enough you can see the pianist hidden on the corner of the balcony.
Live music echoed through the cafe, whilst I lazily rested on the plush velvet cushions and daydreamed away gazing at my impeccable surroundings.
Nothing gets better than sipping on hot chocolate and was wandering through an old 19th century palace.
I wouldn't be able to tell you how long I was here for, but it was long enough after I had eaten my fill of goulash and was on the hunt again for some less refined culinary treats.

That's right, your eyes do not deceive you; I really did go hunting for some street food.
I forgot what this was called but it was like a Hungarian pizza which they baked in a large stone oven outside right in front of you.
You then get to dress/season/smother salsa/chilli/cheese sauces all over it.
I obviously had to take advantage of this generosity.
Look at me go!
Such concentration.

On your way to the Szechenyi thermal baths, you will no doubt pass Heroes Square.
The Millennium Memorial is the central site of Heroes Square, and displays statues of the leaders of the 7 tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century, among with other outstanding figures of Hungarian history.
The construction of this memorial began when Hungary celebrated their 1000th anniversary in 1896, Heroes square was only finished in 1900.
One thing is for certain, it looks stunning in the evening.

Szechenyi Thermal Bath is the largest medicinal bath in Europe.

Its water is supplied by two thermal springs, their temperature is 37 °C and 32 °C respectively.
Initially I was disappointed it wasn't hotter especially given that it was -2°C outside as I ran from the comfort of the changing rooms to the baths.

But, after simmering in the water for a while I realised that if it was any hotter I wouldn't have been able to stay in the bath for as long as I did.

The best part was when I found the whirlpool.

Let's just say I crashed into a few unsuspecting couples, and ruined their amorous displays - muahahaa.

It really was beautiful there, so take my advice and go there in the EVENING.
Everyone looks sexier this way and the bath looks even more glorious.
Check out the guy doing a handstand in the bath. Skills.

It's not hard to see why this is such a popular attraction in Budapest, and is really worth a visit if you're just looking to chill out and play some chess, whilst soaking your aches and pains in the healing waters.
