Brunch at The Winding Stair

By Thedublindiary @TheDublinDiary
"Where to go for good wholesome food as a downpour hits while you're walking down Henry Street?" a question we asked ourselves recently as we ducked for cover. The only eating establishment on the street is McDonalds and it certainly wasn't going to be there! Around the corner between the Ha'penny and Millennium Bridges we found a perfect spot in The Winding Stair.

The Winding Stair - I presume?

Brunch at The Winding Stair

Simple paired back surroundings.

On Saturdays and Sundays they offer a very extensive brunch menu with everything from gammon steaks (€17.95) to poached haddock (€20.95). It has a decisively local feel with provenance  listed for everything right down to the mustard (Dalkey!)

Excellent bangers and mash.

Himself opted for the bangers and mash (€14.95). It was an unusual departure from his much loved Full Irish but not one which he regretted! Two chunky black pudding sausages came atop deliciously creamy chomp with lashing of gravy and caramelised onions. Perfect comfort food for a wet day!

Full full full Irish!

To maintain a sort of consistency with my brunch reviews and because I sorely wanted a nice fry up I chose the Full Irish (€13.95). What arrived was more of a challenge than a plate of food! Free range eggs, Gubbeen bacon, a slab of pudding, an Ed Hicks sausage, not to mention the cheesy baked beans on toast which could have been an adequate breakfast all to itself! This dish could quite possibly cure a hangover and any number of other ailments (perhaps not cholesterol though!).

Super wine selection of which I wouldn't mind trying at least half a dozen!

Our cosy little corner well away from the wind and rain!

The Winding Stair hits both the quality and the quantity nails firmly on the head. It wasn't cheap to eat there but we didn't get cheap food and walked out feeling like we wouldn't need feeding for the rest of the day! The Winding Stair is fast becoming one of my favorite places to get honest Irish food without the side of diddly-eye that's often obligatory!
