broccoli is such a wonderful ingredient or veggie to cook and first i thought to make 65 recipe with this but changed my mind to make sambar recipe from it and here is the recipe to you.i already shared broccoli paratha recipe which is so delicious and i made this one on that day too,broccoli spread you can say:)check how to make sambar powder here.you can add red chili powder if you want the sambar little spicy but sambar powder has enough spice level for it.lets move on making the recipe.,

south indian sambar recipe using broccoli

Ingredients

  • toor dal/tuvaram paruppu - 1/2 cup
  • turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • hing - a pinch
  • broccoli ,separated into florets - 1 cup
  • onion - 1 finely chopped
  • tomato - 1 finely chopped
  • ginger - finely chopped - 1 teaspoon
  • green chilli - 1
  • sambar powder - 1 1/4 teaspoon
  • tamarind pulp - 1/4 cup
  • salt - to taste
  • mustard seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
  • fenugreek seeds/methi seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
  • cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • peppercorns - 3 nos
  • black gram/urad dal - 1/4 teaspoon
  • dry red chilli - 1 no
  • oil - 2 teaspoon
  • ghee - 1 teaspoon
Instructions
  1. Pressure cook toor dal in cooker with turmeric powder,hing and enough water with a teaspoon of oil.cook the dal or lentil till it becomes mushy(pressure cook upto 4 to 5 whistles if it does not cook properly).
  2. In a kadai,heat another teaspoon of oil and add finely chopped tomato,onion and ginger.cook it till it becomes soft and mushy.

  3. now add broccoli florets and green chilli which is slit and added to it.Add salt in this stage and add cooked dal along with water.cover it with lid and cook for approximately 6 - 7 minutes.

  4. Then add the tamarind pulp along with sambar powder to it and mix it well.Again cover with the lid and cook for another 5 minutes.after adding tamarind pulp do not boil it for more than 5 minutes.

  5. Meanwhile heat the ghee in tadka pan and add mustard seeds,peppercorns,cumin seeds,balck gram,dry red chilli,methi seeds.Once it crackle add it to the sambar and switch off the flame.
  6. Serve piping hot with steamed rice and papadam.
