Book to Movie Review–The Book Thief

Book to Movie Review: The Book Thief is an unforgettable novel, so I knew the movie had a lot to live up to. I know a lot of what I loved most about the book was the strange narrator and weird style of writing, but I know that a lot of people disliked the book because of the writing style. For them, I was very excited about the movie. What better way to enjoy a story you can’t enjoy because of the writing style than the movie? I am very pleased to say that the movie was outstanding. I don’t think it could have been better, actually.
The casting was amazing. I thought the characters were portrayed so well, I can’t peel them away from the book characters. I can’t compare the two because the movie characters WERE the book characters. It was that well done. Especially Rudy. I almost forgot how much I loved him and how often he made me laugh and smile.
The Book Thief was an emotional read for me because of how much I connected with the characters. When Rudy painted himself black like Jesse Owens, I smiled and then that same smile was a sad face because of how he can’t be allowed to want to be black or anything else but the perfectly blonde German boy he was. It was so terrible, but touching at the same time. The movie did a spectacular job of being just as emotional. The theater laughed and smiled and gasped and cried. The characters touched our hearts so completely.
There were missing/changed/shortened scenes just like any other movie, but it was a very good adaptation. It was a wonderful movie. I cried and loved it and ached for the characters. It has been a couple of years since I read the book, so a lot of the details weren’t fresh for me and I think the movie gave me a very similar experience as the book, which is rare. I hope the movie starts gaining popularity over the holidays and I hope more and more people get to see it.
Bottom Line: A Must See Movie.
