Those plans started to crumble when her father moved the family to Stoney Ridge, then completely collapsed when John decided to marry someone else. Katrina is devastated. How could she have felt so loved, yet been so deceived? As she struggles to face a future without him, a widow asks for her help to start a new business and Katrina quickly agrees. She needs time to heal her broken heart, to untangle her messy life, to find a purpose. What she doesn’t need is attention from Andy Miller, a farm hand who arrives at the widow’s farm just when help is most needed–and who always seems to say the right thing, and be in the right place, at the right time. Is Andy for real, or too good to be true? Deceived once before, Katrina is determined to keep her feelings in check. When a cascade of events is set in motion by some surprising information, the little Amish church is turned upside down. Soon, everyone has a stake in the outcome, and the community struggles to find the best response to an imposter in their midst. Can they forgive even the most deceitful deeds?Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher introduces her loyal fans to a brand-new series set in their favorite town–Stoney Ridge. As I shared with you in previous book reviews, my mom absolutely LOVES Amish stories. She says she enjoys stories about the more simple times and the clear priorities of faith and family that define the Amish lifestyle. We decided that if any opportunities come up for book reviews on Amish books, she would gladly read them and provide me with her review.
Below is my mother, Gloria’s review of The Imposter by Suzanne Woods Fisher:
The Imposter has a lot of little stories weaved into one big overall picture. Sometimes that disconnects the reader from the stories, but in this case, it was interesting to see how they would be woven together. This is book one in the new series The Bishop’s Family, but it is set in Stoney Ridge, where her last series was set, so familiar characters appear throughout the story.
Katrina Stolzfus is 19 years old and pregnant with John’s baby, but John has decided to marry someone else and Katrina is devastated. While she sees her life crumbling, her widowed father moves the family of six children to Stoney Ridge, Pennsylvania from their Ohio home.
As Katrina is struggling to face her future without John, an opportunity arises when a widow asks for her help to start a new business and she agrees. She needs time to heal her broken heart and untangle her life. As she is rebuilding her life, she meets Andy Miller, a farm hand who says all the right things, but is he for real or too good to be true? Andy appears to be do everything right, and Katrina must watch her feelings for Andy since she was deceived once before.
Katrina’s father, David, is one of the community’s ministers. The little Amish church has several events that turn the church upside down. The tension between Bishop Freeman Glick and Katrina’s father had to do with how a church adjusted to cultural and financial pressure without losing its core values.
Everyone in this little Amish community has a stake in the outcome, and struggles to learn how to response to an imposter in their midst. Can this community forgive?
It was very interesting (in a good way) to see how Ms. Fisher added the twist of deception in the Amish community to this book – not something often displayed in other Amish stories. The Imposter is filled with a slew of secrets coming from all over the place that keep you reading to find out what is happening to each character. The story has some unique twists that make is even more enjoyable. The Imposter is sure to capture and hold your attention and provides several hours of great reading. Gloria enjoyed the book and would also recommend it to others or a great read!
About the Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher is a bestselling author of Amish fiction and non-fiction. Her interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, who was raised Plain in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She travels back east a couple of times each year for research. For fun, too.
Suzanne has a great admiration for the Plain people and believes they provide wonderful examples to the world. She has an underlying belief in her books–you don’t have to “go Amish” to incorporate many of their principles into your life: simplicity, living with less, appreciating nature, forgiving others more readily, trusting in God.
When Suzanne isn’t writing, playing tennis, or bragging to her friends about her grandbabies (so cute!), she is raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. To her way of thinking, you just can’t take life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone’s underwear in its mouth.
