Hayden McCarthy is on track to become the youngest partner in her prestigious D.C. law firm . . . if the case she’s just been handed doesn’t destroy her first.
Hayden McCarthy knows firsthand the pain when justice is not served. It’s why she became an attorney and why she’s so driven in her career. When she’s handed a wrongful death case against the government, she isn’t sure if it’s the lucky break she needs to secure a partnership—or an attempt to make sure she never gets there. She keeps the case alive through sheer determination and more than a little creativity, but then she’s fired by a partner with a vendetta.
Further complicating matters, Hayden keeps finding herself completely distracted by Andrew, her roommate’s cousin. But his father is a Congressman and she’s currently taking on the government. Could the timing be any worse?
The longer she keeps the case active, the higher the stakes become. Unknown enemies seem determined to see either the case—or her—die. Should she fight alone for the dead young man by launching her own unfinanced firm, or abandon the case in order to save her own life?
I was lucky enough to be a part of reading and reviewing the second book in the Hidden Justice series by Cara Putman titled Imperfect Justice (see review HERE). Thanks to my relationship with The Fiction Guild’s Elite Reader Program, I had the opportunity to read the first book – the subject of today’s post – Beyond Justice, but somehow I didn’t add my post. So here it goes:
Beyond Justice, the first in the Hidden Justice series, is a compelling story that could have been pulled from today’s headlines. The characters are smart and they actually grow on you as you read this book with its great paced plot that weaves together suspense and legal drama to keep it intriguing.
Hayden McCarthy is a young attorney who was able to win a case that was potentially unwinnable. Because of that win, her boss assigns her a case that would change her life and the lives of others. A young man named Miguel dies at a juvenile facility for minors caught crossing the border illegally. There is no documentation of Miguel’s death. In fact, the only thing Hayden has is a picture of the murdered boy and a copy of his death certificate. No one will admit that this boy ever existed (much less even murdered) – and the more Hayden investigates the case, the more she encounters roadblocks in her way. Hayden is a strong, confident attorney and she knows what she needs to win this case – nothing will stop her from seeking justice for her clients.
I loved that Hayden and Andrew were just “regular people” – they weren’t law enforcement or military personnel. What I mean is that this story takes regular people who don’t usually put their lives on the line for a living and throws them into a life threatening suspense situation. The suspense of this story forced me to keep turning the pages. I just had to know what Hayden had gotten herself into by taking this case.
Beyond Justice is a legal thriller with a hint of romance, and a whole lot of seeking out God. Readers are reminded that “God is present as we live our lives for Him. He is in the details and He is in the big picture. He sees you and cares.”
This is definitely a 4 star book! Ms. Putnam’s Beyond Justice is definitely a story I would recommend if you are looking for the perfect blend of everything rolled into one!!
