What is Glycemic Index

 GI Index is referred as Glycemic Index. A Glycemic Index is a ranking system in which the carbohydrates are measured on the scale of 0 – 100. It is measured on the basis of the blood sugar level that rise post consumption of food items rich in carbohydrates. It is essential to control sugar levels in our blood. There are three levels of measuring GI Index namely low, medium and high. A low GI index is detected at 55 and below 55. Medium GI Index occurs between 56 and 69. High level of GI index is detected at 70 and above. It is important for the person to consume food items that are less in GI. The ranking is decided depending upon the effect of food items in blood. The food items that ensure a low GI Index are lentils, raw apple, raw carrots, skim milk, peas, kidney beans, grapefruit, etc.

Benefits of a Low GI Diet:

A low GI Index level in body is a key to a healthy life. Higher the levels of GI, higher are the chances of getting impacted with chronic diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, etc.  Low GI intake influences the physiological processes in our body. It balances the physical strength, appetite, energy and cognitive function in our body. A key to happy and healthy living is the consumption of Low GI Food items.

The benefits are as follows:

  • Diabetes-Less production of insulin leads to diabetes. Increase of carbohydrate enriched food items increases the sugar levels in our blood. As a result, there are higher chances of getting affected with diabetes. Thus, low GI Index diet prevents the person from Diabetes.
  • Weight control-Low GI diet gives a feeling of a full stomach to the person. These food items get slowly digested and as a result the person does not feel hungry at all. It delays the hunger pangs and cravings. This automatically controls the calories intake and decreases the weight.
  •  Healthy Heart-Low GI Index Food is a key to a healthy and happy heart. Rise in cholesterol levels create a threat and risk to the heart. But a low GI diet protects the person from such situation. Low GI foods are low in calorie and they do not create any cholesterol inside the body.
  • Boosts the sports person-Sports persons especially athletes require a lot of energy in the events. Hence Low GI Foods strengthen the muscles of the body which help the person in winning the events.
  • Chronic diseases-It is very important to keep one safe and protected from the adversities of chronic diseases. A low GI food controls the blood sugar levels in the body of the person.  It saves the person fromdiseases like heart problems, obesity, type 2 diabetes, stroke and most importantly high blood pressure.

A healthy body is in the hands of the person. Before relying on things around us, it is important for a person to be mentally convinced to take care of one’s body by consuming food stuff that is less than GI Index.
