Beer Review – 16 Mile Harvest Ale

16 Mile Harvest Ale

On a recent trip to Roger Wilco (the old Wine Warehouse in Voorhees), I picked up a mixed six with a number of beers from local brewers. The first of those beers was the Inlet India Pale Ale from 16 Mile. The second was the Amber Sun Ale. The third was the Harvest Ale. I selected the 16 Mile “sampler” as a result of my prior experience with the Old Court Ale. I thought the Old Court was a good beer and when I saw the opportunity to pick up three more of 16 Mile’s offerings, I jumped at the chance.  16 Mile is a brewer in Georgetown, DE that takes its name from an old nickname for the area. Georgetown was thought to be so centrally located that it was said to be “16 miles from anywhere” in the state. The brewery has been around for about 3 years and currently has six beers in its lineup.

Here is what 16 Mile has to say about the Harvest Ale:

Demonstrates the robust flavors of chocolate and coffee. Muddy brown coloring and mild bittering provide a rich, smooth flavor profile; a proper reward after the harvest is over. Rich in agricultural history, the harvest is a critical part of life in Sussex County, Delaware, that spans the entire year. This beer celebrates those who feed their communities.

I found this beer to be…

  • Appearance: Dark, dark brown with quickly dissipating tan foam and a lot of lacing.
  • Aroma: Sweet, roasted malts with big notes of chocolate and coffee.
  • Taste: Sweet chocolate and spices; a creamy brown ale with an almost stout flavor; well-balanced with a slightly bitter finish.
  • ABV: 6.1%

While I enjoyed the Old Court Ale and the Inlet IPA and found the Amber Sun Ale to be a little off, I found the Harvest Ale to be fantastic. I really like brown ales and I thought that the flavors came together to create a great beer. It was actually good enough that my better half said she would drink it. High praise indeed!
