Beautiful Creatures (2013) Review
The American romantic fantasy movie 'Beautiful Creatures' landed in theaters worldwide earlier this year. The film was the adaptation of the book by the same name. This is going to be my first romantic-fantasy review based on that film. A review made from a non-romantic guy point of view. Don't blame me if I didn't get it.
Note: May contain some minor spoilers
I'll be honest. I'm not one of those romantic, love-obsessed guys who rush into any kind of romantic movies that comes into theaters. In fact, I feel like mentioning that I totally hate Twilight. So, you must probably be surprised that I even considered watching this movie. Well, I'm not that bad. I do enjoy all kinds of movies. I was actually interested in this film for two reasons. 1- There were magic and witch craft involved in this film. 2- I wanted to write my first romantic-fantasy review based on it. And of course, I didn't read the book.
Beautiful Creatures (2013) Review
In a nutshell, Beautiful Creatures is about a couple with rather weird habits. A guy named Ethan Wate(Alden Ehrenreich) who keeps dreaming the same dream about a girl. And Lena Duchannes, a teenage girl (Alice Englert) who comes to a very religious town to celebrate her birthday, and she also turns out to be a witch. She lives with her uncle (Jeremy Irons) who has some cool powers like reading the future. All things goes smoothly until Lena's mother possesses Mrs. Lincoln (Emma Thompson), the mother of Ethan's friend. And comes after Lena to complete her centuries old curse. A curse that would kill Ethan and make Lena a dark, nasty, powerful witch. Only way Lena can break this curse is by taking the life of someone she loves.
Beautiful Creatures (2013) Review
Overall, it wasn't so bad. The story was really good at first but then it started to get less interesting and by the it reached the end I was actually a little disappointed. The best thing I love about this film was Emma Thompson's performance. She was excellent. The way she switch between emotions and characters in just a second was astonishing. Other than that, the movie wasn't much fun. The story builds up with mystery, and surprises just to fade away in the middle and finally ends leaving some loose ends. The magic and witch fights were some of the reasons why I stick with it till the end.
I give this movie a rating of 3/5 because of the cool special effects and all the magic stuff. Also the story wasn't too bad either. I know Twilight fans would certainly love this movie and I suppose any fantasy-romantic fans would love it too. Beautiful Creatures movie is now out on Bluray and DVD.
