Abstract
In today's world, beauty is the most important thing. When this beauty gets affected then our social, psychological wellbeing also gets hampered. It might be due to some disease i.e. Leprosy, Discoid lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, dermatitis or may be accidental. People with skin diseases may lose their self confidence also. To get rid of these ailments, Today we are going to discuss one of them named Discoid lupus erythematosus and its management with herbal formulations.
Introduction
Discoid lupus is a chronic autoimmune disorder. This disease affects the skin. This disease gets its name from its coin shaped appearance. This disease produces coin shaped lesions over the skin which causes severe rash that tends to get worse when exposed to sunlight. These rashes can appear anywhere on the body. The most likely parts are the scalp, neck, hands and feet. The lesion can develop severe scarring on the affected part and the central area may appear lighter in colour. This is also known as Discoid Lupus Erythematosus.
Types of Discoid Lupus
It is of three types
Localized - The lesion in this type is limited above the neck only.
Generalized - In this type, patients have lesions above and below the neck. In addition, the lesion may appear on the thorax and the arms.
Childhood - In this type, a person may develop this condition in childhood and these patients later develop Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. They do not have any
sensitivity to the sun.
Etiology/Causes
There is no definite cause of this disease. Excess Sun exposure to the skin may trigger this condition. Basically this is an autoimmune disorder then there is an involvement of environmental and genetic factors.
Clinical features/sign and symptoms
The patient who is suffering from this condition shows following symptoms
- Most common symptom is skin rash which is round and thick
- Blistering lesions
- Skin thinning
- Dark or light skin pigmentation
- Scalp thickening
- Hair loss
- Peeling of the skin
- Itching
Diagnosis
- Firstly, doctors should ensure that the patient does not have systemic lupus erythematosus. Then the doctor will prescribe an anti-nuclear antibodies test.
- For confirmatory tests, one should do a skin biopsy. Biopsy findings include deposits of IgG and IgM on direct immunofluorescence.
- RFT (renal function test) should be done.
Treatment
- In modern medicine, they just prescribe steroids and NSAIDS drugs or ointments for subsiding the symptoms. They just give relief from symptoms, but not treat the condition from its root cause.
- In Ayurveda, this disease is managed by some therapies such as Raktamokshan (Bloodletting), Virechan (Purgation), Ghrit pana (Internal use of medicated Ghee), sheetala and daha shamak palepa because this disease is due to vitiated Rakta dhatu.
Complication
If this disease left untreated, then following complications may arise
- Severe scarring of skin
- Risk for aggressive skin
- Squamous cell carcinoma
