I hang out on artsy sites all the time, and most artsy types are actually quite rational at least when they want to be. At times they are the most rational people around. There is one that is very artsy, prints all sorts of abstruse and “illogical” poetry and literary prose, but the other day, someone asked her to interpret some view of Nietzsche’s, and man, she was on it! She has some great advice about how to live your life too, a lot of wisdom.
I used to hang around artsy types, writers for a long time and then most artists. Sure writers are nutty but mostly they are just emo, often depressives. They drink and emote a lot. They’re not closed off or shut down. They’re extremely opinionated too. Poets are far crazier than prose writers. Poetry readings are full of what you might call neurotic people – very nice but very introverted and somewhat nervous, depressed or “neurotic.” The number of poets who suicide is off the charts.
After that, I hung around artists, as a lot as my friends were artists. I was a writer, and we connected very well because artists and writers can often be on the same wavelength, especially if the artists are intellectual. In some strange and deep way, we are both doing the same thing, we with words on a page and them with drawn images.
Artists are so emo that they are out and out unstable. Many are also depressives and the depression is obvious and deep. Of course they drink and drug. They are fickle as Hell, change their minds about things all the time, and then expect you to follow along as they lane change without reason on the freeways of life. They’re hard to get along with over long periods of time due to their instability, their emotionality, their fickleness, and their downright flakiness.
They are also very introverted, much more introverted than writers. Writers are not as introverted as you think. Journalists in particular can be quite extroverted. They have to interview people and they often work in offices or newsrooms. Journalists are also notorious drinkers and they are stereotyped as hanging out in bars.
I’ve been at large artist parties that were very strange. If you can imagine this: put 100-200 introverts in a room and see what happens. You could have 200 artists in a room at an artist party and they’re all melting into the walls and no one is talking to anyone.
Artists are often very nice, especially female artists, who are the classic very nice introverted sort of woman. These wallflowers can be ravenously horny though. I finally figured out that the reason for that was because they are so introverted, they don’t get laid much, and when they finally get laid, they are trying to make up for lost time, and you end up spending a whole week in bed with them. Quite a few of what you might call “nerdy” women are the same way.
