Overloaded with Real-time GPS Tracking Alerts

GPS tracking software provides an incredible amount of fleet data.  Although there is so much valuable information at your fingertips, it is not necessary to view it all in real-time. Receiving too many notifications for real-time alerts can end up looking like your email spam folder. Enough is enough already, it is time to set up alerts correctly to receive only the information you need. With any good GPS tracking solution, you should be able to customize alerts to receive only what is most important and what you need to take action on.

What Should I Look For in Real-Time GPS Tracking Alerts?

The first tip about how to best use GPS alerts is that you should only receive what you want to take proactive action on. For example, say your fleet has the reputation for speeding and you are looking to take control over this aspect of driver behavior. Setting a speeding alert to be notified when your drivers are traveling over the posted speed limit or an absolute threshold is the perfect use of an alert as a fleet manager.

On the other hand, if you are not directly in charge of  maintenance services, it is not advised to have service reminders sent to yourself throughout the day  for every vehicle in your fleet. With a comprehensive GPS tracking solution, you should be able to customize who alerts are sent to throughout your organization. This way, the direct manager can receive these alerts and take action.

If you still want to receive certain alerts in real–time, just not as frequently, you can also customize how often you receive them. For some, you may want to be notified every two minutes until the issue is resolved, and others only every 5-10 minutes. There are many other types of customizations you can apply to alerts to ensure you are only viewing the information you want to see, when you want to see it.

Types of Alert Customizations:

  • Send alerts to drivers as well as management
  • Exclude PTO from alerts to only get notifications for true idle time
  • Choose which hours or days of the week you receive alerts
  • Include or exclude landmarks/geofences from alerts
  • And more

If you are constantly receiving alerts that are not valuable to you, you may accidentally ignore the important alerts. Ignoring information that requires action will result in far less return on investment from the technology and may lead you to believe that GPS tracking software isn’t a necessary tool.

Schedule Reports

Just because you don’t want to receive all information in real-time, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t review it at some point. Schedule fleet tracking reports to be sent to you once a week with other important fleet data that doesn’t require immediate action on your part.
