When I saw the title of this book, I couldn’t even imagine what the story could be about, but I was curious enough to dig right in when it arrived!
The story is about a young woman, Liz Buckley, who works at a parenting magazine, Paddy Cakes, in New York City. Meternity starts out with Liz attending yet another work-related baby shower. She’s supposed to be leaving for a trip to Paris, but stressed at work and overwhelmed with responsibilities. When she realizes she’s not going to be able to take her trip, Liz actually becomes physically ill. A co-worker notices Liz has a pregnancy app on her phone that she’s testing out for the magazine, and figures she must be throwing up because she’s pregnant.
It’s at that moment Liz decides that maybe it’s her turn to get preferential treatment like the other young mothers in the office, and she doesn’t deny it when they accuse her of being pregnant.
Liz has been overlooked for raises and promotions throughout the years but suddenly she’s being considered. Things are different – she’s able to take time off for supposed doctor appointments and even work from home. Concurrently, Liz is beginning to ask herself questions about her social life and the way her life is going generally. She’s wearing a foam-rubber belly and faking pregnancy symptoms and thanks to her job, she knows all the ins and outs of what to expect each step of the way with her alleged pregnancy. She also meets a new guy who may or may not be the guy of her dreams.
I found Meghann Foye’s writing to be quick and sharp, and overall, it was a fun book. I have to admit, though, that it did bother me a bit that Liz was accepting gifts at a baby shower, and continued the sham of being pregnant. I’m just not she accepted gifts at a baby shower, preferential treatment at work and consistently lied to her dream man, and everyone around her.
