April 12, 2016 – Tuesday’s Training Report

By Debi Lantzer @debiL1611

Who is hearing the crickets chirping down here in “sunny Florida”? I know all you people “up north” with all that springtime snow only wish you could be outside running, biking, swimming and frolicking like us Floridians can, right?

…..and while this post is called Tuesday’s Training Report, it’s really a report about NOT training. It’s funny that I noticed while I was preparing this post of honesty, that the other race ambassadors up in Cleveland, Ohio were also experiencing some issues of their own and not out there training as much as they wanted.  Not all of them mind you, because a couple of them are just all out running beasts, but a few, and that few includes me.

I have been battling with several things and while I could probably get off the training hook by whining about them, it’s not what this post is about.  The fact is this: For the last nearly-three weeks, I’ve been struggling with IT band issues. I’ve also been struggling for many months now with a plantar-fasciitis (foot) issue that never quite seems to go away. It seems to get better and then I forget about it, and then I wake up one morning and feel like it’s never gone away. I’ve stretched, used the roller, used ice, used heat, rested, elevated, and have done everything I can think of to make the constant (but thankfully dull) pain go away, and it’s just not happening. Heck, I’ve even changed out almost every pair of sandals I wear to make sure I have enough arch support and it’s still not resolved.

Could it be possible that these things won’t go away due to the following:

  1. I am currently heavier (in weight) than I have been in the last 15 years?
  2. I am a post-menopausal 55 year old woman?
  3. I was involved in a near-fatal car accident and a lot of my bones are tired of being pushed around.

The answer is probably “yes” to all of the above.  While my training has been very erratic lately based upon whether or not my foot is sore or anything to do with my IT band is swelled or hurts, I know I still should have been posting about it so you all know where I’ve been these last couple of weeks. I’ve done some running here and there, I’ve done some cardio DVD’s here and there, and I’ve done some biking here and there, but none of it has been consistent.

I officially have four weeks until the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Challenge Series, and yes folks, I’m a little worried.  I’ve been known to push through races without proper training, but I also said I wouldn’t do that anymore so we will have to see how things turn out with this one. I figure if I can feel well enough to continue training a little more regularly for the next four weeks, there’s a chance I would feel comfortable pushing through and completing the race because very honestly, I can’t even imagine NOT doing the race this year.

My friend, Jan and I are doing a local 5K this weekend so we will see how that goes. That’ll be a great start. I’ve got another one at the end of the month so that’ll help too.  I know 5k’s aren’t half marathons, but hey, If I can run 3.123 miles four times, I can finish a half marathon, right?

Stay tuned and I promise I’ll post next week on Tuesday to let you know how the week went, whether it was good or bad! In the meantime, be sure to head over to my fellow Race Ambassador, Joe Fell’s blog and sign up to win a registration for any single event of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon! Heck, if I end up having to walk, you can walk with me if you haven’t been training so there’s really no excuse!
