I am working on a document outlining strategies for monitoring and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (hence the recent plethora of posts on the topic!) and sometimes, these documents spout some beautifully poetic paragraphs amidst pages and pages of policy jargon! So I thought of blogging them as and when I come across them!
From Shaban RZ, Simon GI, Trott DJ, Turnidge J & Jordan D 2014, Surveillance and reporting of antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic usage in animals and agriculture in Australia, report to the Department of Agriculture, Griffith University and University of Adelaide, Australia, on page 30, comes a quote that catches me quite off guard:
Elinor Ostrom, 2009 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, has stated in respect of antimicrobial resistance that ‘the issue is comparable to that of climate change in the sense that both phenomena involve non-renewable global resources, both are caused by human activity and are intrinsically linked to our behavior. The problem can only be addressed through international cooperation’
This quote is attributed to Cars, O., Hedin, A. & Heddini, A. 2011. The global need for effective antibiotics—Moving towards concerted action. Drug Resistance Updates, 14, 68-69. Now that goes on the list of must read documents which is rapidly becoming more and more obese!
