So far, Lars and I had explored the southern part of the Algarve like this :
As you can see, we had driven from east to west. This, by the way, was all known territory for me; I had been here more than 20 years ago. At the Cape of St. Vincent, Lars and I had basically two options: go back and visit some of the places we had skipped or go north along the coast. Since I was eager to see new places as well, we chose the latter.
So north we went! Our first stop was a place called Carrapateira.
To give you an idea of the distances, this village is located about 35 kilometres to the north of Lagos and more than 100 kilometres to the northwest of Faro. Because it is situated in a barren and sandy area, it never developed into a town. Carrapateira has little to offer in terms of sightseeing: there is a church and a fortress and that is about it.
Most people visit the village though for this:
Beaches and waves! There is a strong current though, which led to shipwrecks. Carrapateira attracts a young public, especially surfers.
Lars and I only stayed here briefly - we are not exactly surfers! Because of their natural beauty, I was very keen on taking some panoramic pictures of the beaches.
Mission accomplished I would say...
