It's increasingly obvious with each day that we write that we care a lot here, at TLB, about the vocals in music. We think that, in a very general sense, you can't beat someone with a beautiful tone, or an incredible set of lungs, so ... to hear a song that doesn't have one of the best vocals about it, and to still find it pretty damn mesmerising, is quite impressive and, although we have a few things about Bright Light Bright Light's new single that we aren't completely sure on, we know that we really do like An Open Heart.
The first thing that will hit, and what instinctively draws you in, is the synthy backing which is absolutely beautiful. He hits the perfect notes, for us, that make you really want to stick around, regardless of how the other areas of the track are all going to add up.Like something that Waylayers wouldn't be unlikely to create, this track is beyond catchy before any words have even been uttered and, when those words do come in, although they may not be quite what we expected, they're nothing for Bright Light Bright Light to be ashamed of.The vocal is, to be completely honest, nothing we haven't heard before. There's not much in the way of vibrato, and there's nothing outrageously distinctive in the tone ... but, that doesn't suggest that he is bad at all. He hits every note that is asked of him, and whilst it isn't the main element that carries the song through, we can't really knock it either. The other area we would change, to be honest, has got to be the video. There's something about it all which we don't really connect with and, once again, despite it not technically being anything bad at all, there's something about it which we don't quite like and, if it were ours, we would probably have gone much more in the way of something experimental, or story telling-esque, than that of anything to do with him himself. As we previously stated, there is most definitely something about this track, and this band, that is absolutely beautiful. The way in which he creates music is a real art-form and the synths that he uses are utterly stunning. However, if it were up to us, there would be a few slight changes made in order for him to be something for the entire world to admire.
Paul.
