Also known as Alappuzha, Alleppey is a city in the Alappuzha district of Gods own Country Kerala. Enriched with several fascinating backwaters that connect Kumarakom and Cochin towards North and Quilon to the South, it is one of the most visited backwater destinations of Kerala. It is also one of the venues for the famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race which takes place of second Saturday of August annually. The backwaters have a unique eco system with freshwater of the river meeting the sea water from the Arabian Sea. The criss-crossing canals in this area are popularly reffered as the ‘Venice of the east’. The popular attraction of this backwater destination is the palm covered Pathiramanal Island (famous for the migratory birds which come as far away from Siberia to enjoy the summers) in Vembanad Kayal one hour by boat from Alappuzha.
The other major regions of this backwater destination are the Kuttanad region, significant colonial buildings and beach. One can relish various scenic views, aquatic life, lush paddy fields etc. while on your voyage to the backwaters in Alleppey. The exotic backwaters of this place is combined with the geographical feature of having the water in level with the land providing a closer look at the village life of the people.   Previously, the backwaters of Alleppey and other parts of Kerala which are still running were used as a transportation system to carry goods and other necessary materials from one place to another. But, as time passed by, the backwaters have played a significant role in improving the status of people living in the various regions of the state.  In current times, Alleppey has grown its significance as a major backwater destination of Kerala magnetizing numerous travelers from across the globe. Generally the climate of this place is temperate with temperatures ranging between 22 to 35°C in summer and 20 to 32°C during winter making it even more worthy to visit.
