A Quick Guide to Using Social Media

By Bren @Virtual_Bren

Social Media is constantly changing. There is so much to learn, and there are new terms and guidelines that crop up all the time. You might be quite new to social media, or just have a few questions that you need answering about a particular platform. Either way, there is much to learn. Here is a quick guide for you, all about social media.

What is Social Media?

In basic terms, social media is a way for people to interact and connect online. It has been around since the introduction of the internet. It was in very basic terms then, though. Social media has become more and more popular, with more sites popping up all the time. No wonder the FB Stock is increasing all the time! The most common ways to use social media are the classic, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Things like blogs (hello) are on the rise too. We are leaning more towards reading advice on a blog, or watching a video on YouTube, rather than going to a self-help book, for example.

A Quick Guide to Using Social Media - Social media is constantly changing. There is so much to learn, and there are new terms and guidelines that crop up all the time.

Why do we need Social Media?

Well, I don’t think we’ll be seeing the end of it anytime soon. Of course, there are ways to stay in touch with people using social media. A lot of people use it for connecting with family and friends that are no longer close by. But social media is big in business now too. Billions of us are using it daily. Uploading photos and sharing videos and messages. It is reported that over 92% of companies go to social media to recruit. This is done a lot via Twitter and LinkedIn. So it is important to know, that if you are in that position, you need to be active on your profiles. There are even so many things that need you to sign up via a social media channel. So, it is going to be around for a long time.

For companies, they see it as an awesome way to advertise to us. They can make adverts specific to their target market. A woman aged in your late twenties might regularly get fashion adverts or wedding-related ads on their social media channels. It makes it easy for companies to access a large audience. Just think, if Facebook were a country, it would be the third biggest country in the world. That is how many users it has and as a result, the influence it has.

Which Social Media Platforms Do I Need?

Which platforms  you prefer to use is completely up to you. Facebook is a common one and pretty much most people are on it. If you like to blog, then Instagram is a great site to be a part of. It is a photo sharing micro-blogging site. Twitter is a bit hit and miss. A lot of people feel like they don’t ‘get’ Twitter and stop using it. Used in the right way, it can be a great help. You can find like-minded people. You can get customer service on there, and you can enter competitions. So take a moment to think about your lifestyle and which sites you will be able to commit a little time to. You won’t regret it.
