A Mere Presence...

By Pmeurice
Just completed a two sessions portrait sketch in oil at Heatherley this afternoon... A male model, for a change, and I was happy I could capture a bit of his expression.
A nice person to work with and quite an interesting profile ... Placing the Easel on the profile side and against the light is often my first choice : no one wants this place, as it's believed to be challenging... Doing so, I have all the room I need to paint and to move around the Painting and take few steps back to compare the work in progress with the model. Convenient... but not the 'best' location : I would really wish, one day, to be able to work on a proper portrait composition...
Anyway : we are at School to learn, and the essential, with these two session, was to capture a likeness and a bit of the model's mood. To me, he seemed a bit uncertain, present, but elsewhere, his visage was showing a sort of paradoxe, with assertive features, yet, his look was lost, as if he had to catch up with some worrying things right after the session.
Here he is :

A mere presence...

A visage study - a mere presence

I will have other sessions with this model and I am still considering if I will work in oil or not... Maybe some drawings? I will see what the next pose is offering me.
