A Ladybird Cake

For Little Miss A’s birthday cake I decided to make a ladybird.  I had an idea in my head what I wanted it to look like and, although it didn’t look quite as good as I had hoped, I am determined to keep making them their own cakes.  By the time the Little A’s are Big A’s I may have mastered the art of cake decorating!

Anyway, here is my effort…

To make the cake I made up a normal sponge mix (3 eggs with equal weights of flour, sugar and butter) and then placed it into a Pyrex bowl lined with tin foil.  It took a lot longer to bake at 1 hour and 10 minutes and I left it in the bowl to cool so that it didn’t sink too much.

Once cooled I dyed some fondant icing in red (well pinky red!) then covered the cake in warmed up jam and placed the rolled out icing on top.

Once covered I dyed some of fondant icing in black and cut out circles for the spots.  I then stuck these onto the cake with a little water.

I kept some of the icing white to make the eyes.

As I had quite a bit of icing left over, I decided to make some little spotty cupcakes to to go with the cake.

I know it isn’t the greatest cake in the World but I made it and I can only improve from here! Right?!
