“Eating out mentality of people has changed over the years. Today, people go out not only to dine, but to have complete experience.”This statement by Chef Manish Mehrotra reflects the thoughts which accentuate what Indian Accentprovides its guest – a complete experience.
Indian Accent was started by Chef Manish Mehrotra in the year 2009 and over the years, it has gained the cult following attaining the numero uno status in India. The recent entry to the World’s Best 100 Restaurant list and the news of opening in New York’s Le Parker Meridien has added to its reputation.Indian Accent is housed at The Manor, a luxury boutique hotel of Old World Hospitality group located in a quaint corner of the posh New Friends Colony. Though I have gone past this place many a times, but the first opportunity to get to other side of the entry gate came on last Tuesday afternoon. The tranquil feel of the place will take you away from the hustle & bustle of the city. The understated yet elegant décor has a comforting factor to it. The use of fresh Marigold or Indian Gendhaflower (also part of the brand logo) along the pathways does add a bit of color to otherwise minimalistic décor.Tucked in a corner of the property, Indian Accent, has a bar cum waiting area leading to the main dining area. With the outdoor dining area closed for Lunch hours, we opted for a corner seat near the large glass pane overseeing the garden. The new summer menu has been conceptualized and created by Chef Vivek Rana, who is the new executive chef at the Indian Accent. He has put together seasonal local produce to create a combination of vibrant Indian flavors with global cuisine. Chef Rana has been with the Old World Hospitality group for a long time and used to take care of their Luxury Catering division. The summer menu carries some of the superstar dishes of Indian Accent, but Chef Rana has put his stamp of creativity on it. Carrying on the lineage, he has introduced some brilliant dishes which showcased his talent. The Smoked Masala Marwari Papad, which is inspired by the typical Marwari dish, has been carefully played with the cream and smoke, retaining the authentic flavor of the traditional recipe and the crunchiness of the papad. The Steamed Fish with raw mango chutney and mango candy was Chef Rana’s interpretation of a popular Thai recipe. He has used John Dory fish, a white salt-water fish known for its sweet flavor. And with raw mango chutney adding a zing to it, the fish did give us the kick, literally. The Tandoori Mushroom Salad had Gorgonzola cheese, which went well with the earthy flavors of mushroom and lent creaminess to the salad.A Global Dining Experience at Indian Accent
The main course began with Tamarind Fish, a South Indian delicacy served with Coconut Barley & Cashew Pakoda was a stellar. Chef Rana has used Red Snapper, which he gets twice a week from Kochi. The tangy taste of the fish was nicely balanced with creamy barley. Next on the table was Stuffed Morels with Tandoori Chicken & Malai Curry. The meaty flavor of morels gelled with the tandoorichicken and with Malai curry, it reminded of famed Butter Chicken. The Boondi Kadhi with mashed potato & quinoa onion rings was a leaf out of Chetan Bhagat’s novels - a union of flavours of North & South India, Punjabi Kadhi with onion rings made in South Indian style.A Global Dining Experience at Indian AccentThe last course was of desserts. Keeping the tradition of Mango season alive, Fresh Mango Pavlova was an amazing showcase of creativity. Mango Srikhand air, Mango Ice & Aam Pappad added a drama to a regular dessert. You will get three different textures united by one mango flavor. Next dessert was Gobindo Bhog Kheer. A traditional Bengali dessert - Chaler Payesh was dressed with strawberry & mango sorbets, nuts & air-dried fruits, giving it a colourful look and contrasting flavours.
A Global Dining Experience at Indian AccentIt was a one of the most imaginative and unique dining experience as I was amazed by the way food can be so creatively presented. The Chef has done a commendable job of taking traditional Indian recipes giving it a modern avatar retaining the traditional flavors. The food is as global as one can get in the New York(s) and London(s) of the world with the use of innovative cooking techniques and use of ingredients.
