A Formidable Opponent In Joy ...

The Joy Formidable have offered their latest single in the way of Cholla. It comes as the first installment of new album, Wolf's Law, which is due for release in January of next year and is quickly receiving plaudits left, right and center.
Cholla is an inventive mix of heavy guitars and lovingly swept vocals. It's almost immediate and catches you by surprise when the meaty guitar riff comes in, but a sung, I presume, "Wop, Wop, Wop" sort of noise is placed as an undertone. I feel it's as though Evanescence have teamed up with something along the lines of Marina & The Diamonds ...
Ritzy's vocal performance reminds me of Bethany Consentino of Best Coast, although, obviously, the musicality that takes the stage is quite different. There's a constant need for something to pack a punch behind them, meaning that there's always that mixture, making them an alternative band.
In short, it's easy to love this track. It's constantly keeping you on your toes and doesn't miss a beat ... The vocal fits wonderfully, despite the unconventionally beefiness of the music, though, the hints and touches of soft and sweet noises are also absorbed to offer something different, but something fantastic.
